A warm skate suit is the ideal skating apparel for cold ice rinks. A skate suit has long sleeves and legs, ensuring you can skate comfortably and smoothly. Lycra skate suits are thin and the most flexible. With a hood (cap), they are widely used as competition skate suits by beginner long-track skaters.
Marathon skate suits (also known as thermo skate suits) do not have a hood and are made from thicker thermo fabric. This makes them suitable for skate training and longer competitions (possibly on natural ice!). A marathon suit usually has one or more pockets on the back. Many skaters enjoy wearing a so-called marathon suit for training sessions or tours. These skate suits are often lined and wonderfully warm. They are fully elastic, unlike long-track suits, which often contain 'fast' fabrics. The advantage of a thermo marathon skate suit over separate skate pants combined with a skate jacket is its greater flexibility. A jacket tends to get warm quickly, and if you're only wearing a salopette underneath, you can't take it off.
Dedicated long-track skaters use a rubber skate suit. A rubber skate suit has less air resistance, and because the rubber sections in the competition suit 'pull' you into the skating posture, it's easier to maintain a deep position during the race. The downside is that the suit is very difficult to put on, which you often see on TV. Moreover, the rubber panels in the skate suit are prone to tearing, so caution is advised! Long-track riders always wear a skate suit with a hood. Aerodynamics are very important during time trials, and these suits are developed in wind tunnels, incorporating the latest materials. The critical nature of this was evident in the poor performance of the Americans in Sochi.
