During skating on natural ice, cycling in winter cold, or on a rainy day, you can quickly suffer from cold feet. Using overshoes prevents your feet from getting cold and/or wet.
Skateers primarily use overshoes on natural ice. The skate boot itself offers poor insulation, and because skaters tighten their skates very tightly, blood circulation is often restricted. This can lead to numb feet. Use neoprene overshoes during the coldest conditions. On the ice rink, you can use Lycra overshoes; these primarily serve an aerodynamic and aesthetic function and offer little insulation.
The closure and attachment of overshoes are a separate topic. Most overshoes need to be put on before you put on your skates or cycling shoes, otherwise, you won't be able to get them over your footwear. There are also models with a zipper at the back. These can be removed during a cycling or skating tour without unlacing your skate or cycling shoe.
