Klapskate frames: choosing the right foundation for your speed skates
We offer a variety of skate blades for mounting under skate boots, including klapskate frames, click noren frames, fixed skate frames, and shorttrack frames. On this page, we'll explain everything about klapskate blades and what to consider when purchasing them. Klapskate blades fit almost all skate boots from various brands.
What to look for when buying klapskate frames
When buying klapskate blades, you'll focus on the following aspects: length, hardness of the blade, rocker (rounding), the bridge, and the pivot point. You can read all about the first points on our general skate blade page, as these aspects are consistent across all skate blades. The key differences for klapskate frames lie in the bridge and the pivot point of the skate blade. Below, we'll explain what the bridge and pivot point are and what to pay attention to.
The bridge
The bridge of the klapskate is the part that attaches to the skate boot. Most bridges are made of stiff aluminum. For a while, composite bridges were also made, but these proved to be quite fragile and often broke.
The pivot point
The pivot point is the heart of the klapskate. It consists of small bearings, an axle, and, of course, springs. Fortunately, most klapskates now have springs on the sides, making replacing klapskate springs a breeze. However, older Viking Nagano frames or Raps klapskates have springs integrated into the pivot point, and replacing them is no small feat.
